Abstract
Language is communicated through discourse which consists of texts between a speaker and a hearer. This paper aims to describe modal verbs that are uttered in hospitality English on the basis of Wilson and Sperber’s(2012) relevance theory. This paper shows the meaning and function of English modal verbs used in the hospitality English which represent various meanings relying on the discourse contexts. Moreover, we suggest that the meaning and function of modal verbs based on the relevance theory has to be taught to learners in hospitality English.
