Abstract

The current study aims to analyze the basic vocabulary list presented in 2015 revised national curriculum by comparing it with the top 6000 word list in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). With the corpus-based analysis, we have found four characteristics of a basic vocabulary list and the vocabulary list in seven high school textbooks. First, the basic vocabulary list in 2015 revised national curriculum included 84.7% of the top 6000-words of the COCA. Second, only one textbook reflects 91% of the words in the basic vocabulary list, and the other textbooks reflect less than 80% of them. Third, when the words are divided into two categories, such as content words and function words, the average reflecting rate of the basic words in function words is 22.1%, and the one in content words is 65.6%. This leads us to conclude that the content words reflect more words in the basic vocabulary list than the function words. Finally, all seven English textbooks contain less than 11% of the top 6000 vocabularies in the COCA corpus.
