Over the past five years, there has been a renewed and steady interest in the pedagogical application of flipped learning and active learning in the field of higher education. From a perspective of educational constructivism, this paper investigates the efficacy and potential of active learning-based TOEIC courses in a university setting. In a move away from the previous studies that use traditional statistical programs such as SPSS, SPS, Minitab and examine a small portion of data, this paper analyzes 1,335 students’ TOEIC score by adopting the R program that allows data representation more visually and intuitively. The finding shows that the active learning model has a positive influence on the improvement of students’ TOEIC score. Notably, the educational benefit is strengthened when it comes to intermediate or advanced learners and when students actively patriciate in the prerequisite online learning before the class. Based on these results, this paper further suggests how to create a learner-centered classroom where students can develop as collaborative and creative learners.
