Abstract
This study examines the variables that influence the attitudes toward the Korean language of foreign learners residing in Korea. It also explores the differences based on their mother tongue background. To this end, 260 questionnaire responses and follow-up interviews were analyzed. The results portrayed that their attitudes toward Korean were incredibly positive in both integrative and instrumental domains. Proficiency, learning period, and gender were related to both domains, and learning goal was a major variable in instrumental orientation. Concerning mother tongue background, there was no group difference in integrative orientation. However, the English group rated remarkably lower in instrumental attitudes, which starkly contrasts with the native Chinese. The Vietnamese group revealed similar affection in both domains. The findings imply that environmental exposure and clear goals enhance language proficiency, leading to positive attitudes toward Korean. It also suggests that the unbiased angle of the native Korean on learners' mother tongue background appeared to play a crucial role in effective Korean language learning and positive attitudes.
