The Relationship between Self-directed Learning Readiness, Learning Motivation and Willingness to Communicate in English

Abstract
The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between self-directed learning readiness (SDLR), learning motivation (MOT) and willingness to communicate (WTC) in English. To this end, 576 EFL students from 4 different Korean universities participated in this study. Quantitative results showed that students’ SDLR and their WTC in English were at the low level and their English learning MOT was at the moderate level. The results also revealed that there was a statistically significant positive correlation between SDLR and MOT (r=.685), and that there was also a significant positive correlation between SDLR and WTC (r=.549) and between MOT and WTC (r=.630). In addition, the results of multiple regression showed that SDLR and MOT were both significant predictors of WTC. The Structural Equation Model analysis showed that there were significant pathways from MOT to SDLR, from MOT to WTC and from SDLR to WTC. Implications for language learners and teachers were discussed.
