The purpose of this study is to apply the metaphor theories to some collocate pairs and to propose some suggestions about how to apply cognitive linguistics principles to various collocate pairs. In order to achieve the goal of this study, the following study questions were constructed by researching cognitive linguistics, metaphor theory, conceptual metaphor and the theories of collocations. The relationship between the conceptual metaphor and collocations was also investigated. The findings of the data analysis showed how collocations representing negative conditions or states are formed and expanded by metaphor. This study suggests the applicable cognitive-semantic principles to various collocate pairs through the results of the findings. Study questions were constructed by researching metaphor theories and the theories of collocations. Data analysis included Corpus of Contemporary American English, The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English, Oxford Collocations
Dictionary for students of English, Longman Online Dictionary, Online Collocation Dictionary etc.
