Abstract

The current study aims to explore how relevance theory explains metaphor. According to relevance theory, ostensive communication is the domain of a dedicated cognitive system. This module is responsible for inferring the meaning that the speaker intends by their ostensive stimulus. A significant process in this system is adjusting lexically encoded meaning. This includes the meaning communicated by certain instances of metaphrical language use. This paper looks at those cases raised by the idea that the hearers infer ad hoc concepts before the comprehension process. Relevance theory can offer some application in this context, as it can explain the comprehension of metaphor itself.
