As the English education crisis is currently being discussed in Korea, this study examines the discourse on this issue based on the media articles and academic papers, and further explores the direction of college English education. Recently, English-related departments have been reported to be the most frequently closed in Korean universities. It was also found that the importance of English has decreased since the subject was changed to an absolute grading system in the college entrance exam. In addition, as universities have recently opened digital literacy & AI-related courses, the number of college English classes has been significantly reduced in many universities. Now, college English education should serve to develop integrated thinking skills necessary in the 4th Industrial Revolution era. This is a call to action for English instructors and researchers to unite their voice, with individuals and organizations needing to make efforts to overcome the English education crisis in Korea. This study suggests follow-up research on teaching methods and curriculum for college English education appropriate for the 4th Industrial Revolution era and cooperation between English instructors and related academic societies.
