The study examines English texts in CBI classes to illustrate how the functional grammar can help English learners understand in grasping the main ideas of the texts. More specifically, to find out what messages the writers try to convey through the texts, the Theme-Rheme constructions of the texts are analyzed to find out what language elements appear in the Theme position and how often they appear in the position. As a result, we found out that the writers used the same phrases repeatedly in the Theme position to emphasize what s/he wanted to talk about to the readers in both texts. Moreover, the patterns of Theme-Rheme constructions are different according to the level of the texts. While the beginner-level text employs only simple Themes, the intermediate-level text incorporates both simple and multiple Themes.
