This study, motivated by the limitations of transcription-based evaluation for articulatory guidance, explores the explainability of pronunciation assessment using a GPT-4o Realtime API–based system, focusing on Korean L2 learners’ three-way stop consonants. A total of 120 utterances from 40 Indonesian and Vietnamese learners were analyzed, and expert ratings, Azure scores, and Realtime API assessments were collected. Realtime API outputs were annotated for error location, cause, correction, and encouragement. We examined explanation consistency, performed k-means clustering, and compared score distributions using descriptive statistics and Bland–Altman analysis. The Realtime API and Azure produced higher scores than experts and showed similar distributional patterns. The Realtime API accurately pinpointed erroneous syllables and provided concrete correction suggestions, although causal explanations were often vague, showing only partial consistency. All responses included encouragement (e.g., praise, acceptance, clarity emphasis, practice prompts). Focusing on Korean three-way stops, this study suggests that the Realtime API can deliver actionable, real-time, speech-based explanatory feedback; future work should validate acoustic-phonetic causes and explore classroom applicability. - COLLAPSE

This L2 corpus study investigates how Korean learners use L2 English partitive constructions in which a quantifier is followed by of (i.e., [Q + of]). In a partitive, of must co-occur with a definite DP, and the embedded count noun is required to be plural. A total of 952 nominal phrases containing [Q + of] were analyzed. The results show that Korean learners rarely omitted a definite determiner in the embedded DP, in contrast to the findings of previous studies (Shin et al., 2018; Yoo and Shin, 2020). However, they frequently used [Q + of] inappropriately in non-partitive contexts, overusing of when the quantifier should directly combine with an NP. In addition, plurality errors were more common in partitive contexts than in non-partitive contexts. This paper provides an account of the underlying sources of these error patterns. - COLLAPSE

This paper conducts a contrastive analysis of the evidentiality and person restriction associated with the Korean ‘-deo-(-더-)’ and the Chinese ‘来着(lái zhe)’. The study confirms that both forms function as evidential markers. The Korean ‘-deo-(-더-)’ serves as a marker of direct evidentiality and is used when the speaker has directly observed an action. Consequently, a first-person subject restriction arises in declarative sentences containing ‘-deo-(-더-)’ because speakers cannot directly observe their own actions. In contrast, the Chinese ‘来着 (lái zhe)’ indicates that the speaker possesses definite evidence of an event they have personally experienced and expresses confidence in their recollection of that experience. Considering these differences in person restriction, this paper examines the similarities and contrasts between the Korean ‘-deo-(-더-)’ and the Chinese ‘来着 (lái zhe)’ through a comparative analysis. - COLLAPSE

This study examines the humor of Amu Mal Daejanchi, a segment from KBS’s Gag Concert, through Incongruity-Resolution Theory and Relevance Theory. The analysis identifies five characteristics that define this high-density comedy format: the normalization of non- contextuality as a rule, minimal processing effort via strong non-verbal setups, shared cognitive rules between performers and audiences, contextual effects through the interplay of old and new information, and pattern-based incongruity that balances repetition with variation. This study demonstrates how traditional humor principles are implemented in extreme and novel forms in short-form comedy, aligning with cognitive processing patterns favored in the compressed media era. - COLLAPSE

This study investigates the extent to which semantic roles and syntactic structures in advertising headlines are conditioned by product categories. The analysis demonstrates that the distribution of semantic roles exhibits significant associations with product types: automobiles predominantly highlight consumer benefits, drugs and cosmetics emphasize functional properties, clothing foregrounds external form, food products stress constituent composition, and alcohol or tobacco products foreground the manufacturer. In contrast, the association between product types and syntactic realization is comparatively weaker, although discernible tendencies are observed. Rational product groups such as automobiles and drugs show a preference for sentential constructions while avoiding elliptical forms, whereas emotionally oriented groups such as cosmetics, clothing, and alcohol favor shorter and more fragmentary expressions. These findings provide empirical evidence for systematic interactions between linguistic expressions and product categories in advertising. - COLLAPSE

The main purpose of this study is to examine how EFL students develop and manifest a newly emerging concept of prompt literacy when interacting with generative AI (GenAI). Specifically, 43 undergraduate students participated in a project-based learning task that explored the sociocultural meanings and variations of English words or expressions by creating webtoons, short videos, or web pages with the help of GenAI. The study examined the whole process of their exploration, design, and production, and sharing, enhanced by interactions with GenAI, peers, and the instructor. Through an in-depth analysis of qualitative data from students’ reflections and creation logs, this study analyzes how they conceptualized prompt literacy through two dimensions: ‘little p’ (micro and foundational level) and ‘Big P’ (macro and integrative level). Findings reveal that the ‘little p’ dimension involves skills of writing, reading, iteration, structuring, clarifying, and contextual adjustment, while the ‘Big P’ dimension includes agentive collaboration, emergent creativity, multimodality, critical analysis, and ethical responsibility. More importantly, these two dimensions are interconnected and mutually complementary. Based on these findings, this study sheds new light on a dual model of prompt literacy and highlights the pedagogical importance of fostering a cyclical development of foundational and integrative prompt literacy. - COLLAPSE

This study examines the presence of fascist discourse in Donald Trump’s 2025 Truth Social posts through using Umberto Eco’s (1995) fourteen features of Ur-Fascism. One hundred posts were collected and qualitatively analyzed to identify linguistic and ideological traits characteristic of fascist rhetoric. The analysis identified 275 instances of Eco’s fascist discourse features, with “Life is Permanent Warfare,” “Selective Populism,” “Cult of Tradition,” and “Fear of Difference” appearing most frequently. Collectively, these findings suggest a sustained rhetorical pattern of authoritarian and ultranationalist expression in the analyzed corpus. The findings indicate that Trump’s rhetoric shows substantial correspondence with Eco’s model of fascist discourse, suggesting that certain rhetorical patterns associated with Eco’s framework persist within contemporary digital populism. - COLLAPSE

This qualitative study investigates how two international students construct and negotiate their multilingual identities within English-Medium Instruction (EMI) programs at a Korean junior college. Grounded in a poststructuralist perspective on identity (Norton, 2000), the study employed narrative inquiry through multiple interviews conducted over the course of one year. The findings show that the students’ identity trajectories diverged: one student initially resisted the Korean-dominant environment but was able to participate in the college community using English as a lingua franca and gradually expanded her multilingual identity by investing in learning Korean, while the other flexibly used three languages and sustained a stable sense of multilingual ownership. These contrasting pathways demonstrate that multilingual identity formation is dynamic and shaped by sociocultural contexts. Implications are discussed for enhancing institutional support for international students’ identity development within EMI programs in Korean higher education. - COLLAPSE
